The Greenest Version of Midtown Yet: NYC Unveils the Park Avenue Redesign

For decades, the "parks" in Park Avenue have been little more than a "look-but-don't-touch" median for taxi cabs to whiz past. But that’s about to change. The NYC Department of Transportation has officially pulled back the curtain on a vision that transforms an 11-block stretch (from 46th to 57th Street) into a vibrant, pedestrian-first corridor.

This isn't just about aesthetics. The redesign is cleverly timed with the MTA’s massive, multi-year rehabilitation of the Grand Central Terminal Train Shed located right beneath the street. Since the "roof" of the train shed (the street itself) needs to be repaired in phases anyway, the city is seizing the moment to rebuild the surface for more pedestrian friendly uses.
